Guitar Player Chord Change Warm-Up Exercise.

A classical guitar student taught me this chord change warm-up exercise 20 years ago and i still run through it all the time, mostly unconsciously. Very unobtrusive, informal and fun.

Can do exercise anytime, but especially while preparing to play guitar, banjo, bass, mandolin, dulcimer. Possibly effective for writing, pottery or typing, etc. Done with each hand for a few minutes right before practice, it should give a warm, radiating feeling that spreads and relaxes. When you get good enough, try to switch fingers in the air, before contact.

Benefits include: loosen, warms and stretches fingers, hands, wrists, arms; focuses and clears mind; good ice breaker or party gag.

This exercise can be done on the edge of a table, the body of your instrument or an arm or leg. I usually use an arm or palm. Each step creates a distinct hand shape. If it hurts, don't press so hard or overstretch.

Start slow and rhythmic ("1...2...3...4...1...2...3...4") and work your way up slowly to a moderate speed ("1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4"). Think loose, quick, firm and agile, but not aggressive.
