"What to wear when on the Outside. I always knew that I didn't fit in with the rest of my ultra-conservative Muslim community. While I spent a few years of my childhood struggling to behave and look like the other Muslim girls, repeated rejection and emotional abuse by the same people I had grown up with allowed me to pave my own path out of the community and into a world that I would explore alone. And anyone can say that they've felt loneliness, but Saturday night the emptiness I felt was amplified to a new level. Kids and teenagers from the mosque were performing songs and dances relating to the occasion, and even my parents joined the circular mass of people, but I remained watching from afar. I may have looked like everyone else there, but where they ended and I began was finally defined."
