Advice to myself aged 12-20
-Don't make your life about backup plans. When you apply to college, go with the intention of pursuing the things you know you love.
-That boy--the one who tells you you're beautiful-- the one with the girlfriend. Walk away in the beginning. Don't stand around; don't let him go from being an unimportant character in your life, to the asshole that left you completely affected. Just ignore it. It will seem so wonderful, but it will always be difficult to forget.
- Freshman year in college, every time you go out drinking, leave your phone at home. You will be very happy you did.
- That same year-drink less. You will be very happy you did.
- Go to the doctors when you start middle school, you'll find something out that will change the way people respond to you for the rest of your life. It's a good thing-don't worry.
- Don't go back. You will think you're in love. But you're confused. Take your time. Travel. You don't need to be in any rush.
- Sing. Paint. Act. Begin when you're young. It will make you much happier once you're older.
- Realize that the idea you have for college, that beautiful picture in your mind-it won't go anything like that-so stop trying to make it be that and accept what it becomes.
- Don't live with the roommates you have sophomore year, instead live with your other option. This will be one of the best decisions you will ever make.
- The person, who is your best friend at school, actually isn't. This will suck to accept. So before you have to find out, go out, and create a life away from her. This will save you from depression.
- Give him warning you're going to break up with him. He will hate you otherwise. Talk about your problems, instead of letting them fester.
- Don't spend money on stupid things. Check your bank account. You're going to overdraw a lot otherwise.
- In middle school, accept a lack of acceptance from the kids who appear popular-they will all end up pregnant after high school anyway, and they were never worth your time.
- Over thanksgiving break freshman year, don't sleep in the same bed as that boy. It will be one of the worst mistakes of your life.
- Do better in school, don't think you're better than it-- it will just screw you. If you do that, then you can go abroad and all will be good in the world.
- Drink less. You will be very happy you did.
