Advice to myself at age 14-15
1. You don't have to be like all the other girls. It doesn't actually matter that you don't have as much money as them. It doesn't make them better.
2. It's okay that you listen to Marilyn Manson as well as the Spice Girls. It's not that weird. But stop now, before it's too late. Go out and buy Fugazi's 13 Songs and Wire's Pink Flag. And don't entirely discount your Dad's suggestions; you'll love Tom Waits and Billy Bragg when you're older. Start stealing his CDs now, it'll be easier.
3. Carving a star into your hip with a compass is a dumb idea.
4. You don't have to date every boy who wants to date you. You are better than a lot of these boys. Don't date Mark Hards, he's got the intelligence of a wooden post. And don't make out with Tom Williams. He's got a girlfriend and you know it.
5. Start your real education. Read Germaine Greer, read Betty Friedan. Read Kropotkin and Goldman. Start challenging what people say to you and what they tell you to think and do and be.
6. Spend more time with Katie. You will probably never meet anyone with as amazing a life as yr great grandmother. And when she dies, you'll wish you'd heard more of her stories. So start listening now.
7. Go vegan, as soon as possible. But before you do, make sure you try Max Brenner's white hot chocolate and eat a lot of cheese. Just get that stuff out of the way really quickly and then go vegan.
8. Your sister will end up being one of your best friends. Don't get petty now. Let her keep the stupid pedal pushers.
9. Join the athletics team. You won't be as good as Nat, but you're not an awful runner. It will keep you fit.
10. Get Amina's number and email address and stay in touch. Otherwise when you're 22, you and Zoe will spend hours trying to find her. Save yrself the trouble.
