Advice for Robin at age 17
1. Don't quit ballet: there is a lot of turmoil in your life right now, but do not let that go. Be strong, you will make it out just fine. You need to realize what is important versus what is transitory. Hanging out and drinking beer may seem cool, but it is temporal. You are a talented dancer. Don't give up. Give modern a serious shot.
2. Be kind to your mom. Both of your lives will be rocked in the next year, but it will be especially tough and lasting for her. Try to understand why she is making seemingly bad choices right now; she is tired, scared and lonely. She loves you and you love her more than anyone in the world. You will both end up hating her new husband in a very short time, but you will get a sweet baby sister out of the mess. Hang in there.
3. Don't be such a bitch to Barbara. She is a good person and will be in your life for a long time to come.
4. Be kind and supportive toward your brother. He has a hard time fitting in because he is smart and sensitive, and unfortunately he has long suffered because of it. He has also suffered as the butt of your own low self-esteem. Give him a break. Let him be who he is. He will turn out to be a smart, funny dude and an invaluable friend. News: he always has been.
5. Learn to play a musical instrument.
6. Go by your middle name when you get to college because the jokes are tired, and by the time you are twenty-four it seems a little late to make the switch.
7. Most importantly, and this you must keep in the front of your brain and believe with all of your heart for the rest of your life: Respect yourself. You are worthy of respect from yourself and all others, and you must demand it. . Know who you are, what you want, and why you exist.
8. Do not sleep with stupid boys to be cool or because you think that they will not like you otherwise. They are major tools and you will cringe when you think that you succumbed to that pressure. One day you will find that man who thinks that you are perfect and treats you like a goddess. His name is Noah...you will know him when you see him.
