Dear Penny aged 22. You are going to make a lot of mistakes in the next few years. Be cool, take them all as lessons. Letting go is actually your biggest lesson. Take note on the following mistakes that could actually blessings in disguise... well you can tell yourself this if you choose to make them regardless of my warnings. And remember to smile, be lovely to yourself, and see through the facade. The Stones were right... you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need.
Possible mistakes:
1. Don't waste your time wondering about life, just do.
2. Travel young, a lot, and never hurry back. The life of a bohemian artist actually IS all it's cracked up to be.
3. Both good looking and unattractive men will screw you over in the next 5 years, there is no formula here.
4. Keep growing your hair, it suits you better and despite what Debbie said the colour is not mousey.
5. Hang out with grandpa more, he dies next year and you miss him. Oh, and set 2 alarms for the funeral, you slept through the first and missed your flight.
6. Your university thesis has no point, choose something your passionate about and save yourself months of hair pulling and procrastinating. In fact, quit university and start composing music again, you'll be infinitely happier.
7. Go to Rwanda, don't hesitate.
8. Josh ends up with dreadlocks and dating the school bike. High STD risk if you hang in there.
9. Have fun with Robert but don't get engaged, world of pain here... and if you do go against this advice then yes, still throw the ring in the ocean and never be bitter.
10. Don't sleep with your therapist friend, free therapy is hard to come by.
11. If I can't stop you from having bulimia then make sure you rinse afterwards with bi-carb, your teeth start to rot at thirty. Luckily you can afford all new surfaces, but it sucks anyway.
12. As for career, you know what you want to do so just do it and realise that no matter what you do, don't have expectations of it. The life drains out of what you love when it becomes a goal in the distance. Love something every moment you are doing it.
Listen to more beautiful music and take long walks.
Advice for last month...
1. Don't waste time googling ex-boyfriends and the meaning of life, the answers you'll find online are hardly enlightening.
2. Dave wants redemption, not love, realise this when he calls.
3. You are not your thoughts. So watch and laugh and enjoy the show. Be kind to yourself, if you're waiting for a guy to fill this role it's the beginning of an endless search.
4. At the critical point in every decision as yourself, "does this further my life's purpose?" If not, put down the chocolate/24 year old lover with addiction history/flea market bargain and move along.
