Advice to Vanessa at age 17
1) Don t screw over Rob by taking Alex out on your non-prom night. You promised Rob first, and Alex is gay, anyway. You ll find that out in a few years when you re both in college in Boston.
2) Just because you can drive Mom s car doesn t mean you have to get McDonald s drive-through all the time. It s just like when you were a kid and you snuck off to the stationery store for candy on your bike. You will not realize that this habit will chase you throughout your life and be responsible for your weight gain.
3) Take the prospect of leaving high school early more seriously. The only things you like about it are drama club, choir, and synagogue youth group. You d be much happier spending this year in an early acceptance college program.
4) Don t let Eric make you do things to him that you don t want to do, but will anyway because you know other kids your age are.
5) Your depression is a serious illness. Try not to fight with Mom and Dad so much because they re only trying to do what s best for you. They really do love you.
6) On the subject of college, don t just apply to the good journalism schools (in 8 years you won t even be in journalism, anyway). Look at the liberal arts schools in New England; check out alternative college experiences.
7) Keep in touch with Mrs. F after high school. She is a great mentor.
8) Know that while the best friends you will have over the next few years will be gay men, you cannot spend your whole life with them. They will not, no matter how much you want them to, tend to both your physical and emotional needs.
