Advice to Silla Shenandoah at 20 years old:
1. When Luke asks you to marry him, say no, no matter what your mother calls you. You will have a beautiful son but an ugly marriage.
2. When you feel red flags, heed them like a bible. You are right more often than not.
3. Do not marry until you meet Simon. He is the right one.
4. Save money. Take that beautiful son to many beautiful places outside the U.S.
5. Really heal yourself after your mother dies.
6. When you meet Richard, leave immediately and do not ever look back. Otherwise he will try to ruin your life and the lives of those you love. "There is nothing we can do about jerks".
7. Refinish the hardwood floors when you move into your house, even though they're crooked.
8. Better yet, move to the country and leave Roanoke before buying that house altogether. You need a river, woods, bonfires and moonshine.
9. Do not major in studio art at that private college- for the obvious reasons.
10. Forgive yourself everyday for the past that is not your fault. It may lead you to make future bad decisions. You just house your heart in your head.
11. In reference to #11- Love differently. And be friends, even lovers, for 3 years minimum before any committment is accepted.
12. Remember that you are strong and that your opinion matters to those who listen to you.
13. Bad apples rot.
14. Do not talk quite so much and stop yelling before you start.
15. Begin listening to yourself. Pamper yourself a bit more and don't feel guilty about it. It's ok to make yourself happy. Grow your hair long and don't cut it again.
16. Don't start going to Spike's or C.I. no matter how rebellious or confused you get. It will cause much regret.
