Advice to Shawn RL at Age Fourteen:
1. Stop missing so much school just because you're tired. You're not yet at an age where school is quite so scary. You're just being lazy. If you can't get there on time, be a few hours late. As long as you're going, you'll be okay. You don't have to be super-dedicated to getting good grades, but remind yourself that decent grades could help lead yourself to a better life and more options for the future.
2. Attempt to be even closer with Erin. Don't simply forget or ignore her because she deals with friendship in a less enthusiastic way than others. One day you'll wish you'd made a stronger connection with her.
3. Don't disclose your sexuality to Stephanie because you think it'll make you two better friends. She's not to be trusted. Just because you feel secure in telling your secret to one person doesn't mean others will be quite so supportive. Telling her will end up being one of the biggest mistakes you've ever made.
4. Spend your days being more productive. Don't simply lay around doing what's comfortable. Challenge your body and your mind. Explore your interests.
5. Be even more open with your social worker/counselor. You'll find you'll miss her in a few months. She gave good advice. She could offer genuine support.
6. Remember your need for friendship is yearning. Be around people you're truly comfortable with. People that truly and genuinely accept you. These are the people that you'll miss in the future.
7. For the love of God, stop shoplifting. It'll help ruin your future.
