Advice To Lara, Age 9
1. Don't worry about everyone else talking about you. Eventually, you will lose all that weight, and you'll look in the mirror and smile.
2. Don't be so quiet! You have too much to say to keep it inside. Being quiet is not the way to fit in, you're just isolating yourself. You'll figure out later people like what you have to say, and they'll want to hear more.
3. Stop asking for a dog. You will get one when you're 12 and it will be the best thing that ever happened to your family.
4. I know Mom is not exactly the best person. But she tries. You have to learn how to listen to what she wants and eventually there will be harmony between you two. She will never let you stop being her daughter, even after therapy with her, you will eventually understand why she does what she does.
5. STOP LYING! It just gets you into trouble, and it's just easier to tell the truth. Like when you get that dog, if you do decide to play with it in the backyard and accidentally hit it with a bat, tell mom and dad the real story.
6. You're mature for your age. Get used to it. It'll be that way for a while. Even though you will feel lonely and out of place for most of your life, it's good to be different. You'll end up loving yourself even more for your uniqueness.
7. You know Phil's friend Kenny? Be nice to him. You will date him for a long long time. He will be your prince in shining armor. And no, Disney never lied to you. Falling in love at first sight is real.
8. Dad is a great person. He may never really talk or be home all that much, but he'll be there for you when you don't expect it. Spend more time with him. When you're older, you'll feel like you never even knew him until you graduated high school.
9. Keep Marie in your life. Make sure she doesn't drift, before it all becomes too hard to keep in touch with her. And you stop talking, and wished that maybe, you should have called her more often.
10. Don't be so hard on Sean. Maybe ever think he might have it worse than you? He's annoying and your little brother. That's what he's supposed to be. Don't take out your anger on him. You will end up feeling guilty for telling him he was a mistake.
11. Keep drawing. One day, you'll grow up and love what you do. You'll go to college and that's the only thing you'll ever want to do. Take classes. Art is your thing. Don't reject it.
12. Understand you are who you are for a reason. Love yourself. It's the best feeling in the entire world. Don't hurt yourself because you feel like you deserve punishment for being different. What you deserve is love and respect. Just wait a while, you will grow into yourself and realize that being a teenager is never easy. Oh, also: smoking isn't cool. Just don't do it.
