Advice to Carla at age 7 (and beyond):
1. Don't mistake the absence of meanness for niceness. In 3rd grade, E. will call you up and ask you to play, explaining that she only wants you because everyone else she called was busy. Don't hang out with people when you're only their back-up. Go hang out with Melina and Larissa instead.
2. Watch out for people named Jordan. I'm not saying be prejudiced, but a disproportionate number of difficult boys and girls in your life carry this name. So be wary.
3. Study abroad, as soon and as often as you can. And don't stop studying German.
4. It's okay to be alone, and it's good to be able to be alone, but it's also okay to be with someone.
5. When you get to high school, ask out that curly-haired boy. If you wait, and keep waiting, you'll regret. Maybe he's shy too. Same goes for the boy on the bus, the boy on the subway, the boy at Trader Joes.
6. You can skip way, way more school. Especially IB classes.
7. Cut your hair. Don't hide behind it.
8. Learn to dance. Quit soccer and find something else you like to do outside.
9. Don't swear at your parents. Even if you don't mean it, it will hit them, and you can never take it back.
