Advice to Amy age 16:
1. Forget about him. He doesn't care about you even if he thinks he does. You are just convenient and he is going to prove that many times and break your heart over and over. He is going to make you doubt the boy you fall in love with in a few years, which isn't fair to him. He will be a great guy, and you will know it.
2. When you go to Myrtle Beach, don't get drunk and cry in front of him. He isn't worth it. You should date his cousin, Eric. He likes you a lot and is a really good guy. You'll see that after he's given up on you and dates another girl.
3. Pay attention to how much you drink. Drinking to the point of passing out is not attractive. Otherwise you could avoid the many instances of moments you would like to forget, but your friends will bring up forever, including after prom junior year. You will go home drunk the next morning and have your parents see you that way. You do not want that.
4. Shoplifting is not a good idea. Stop it, because the one time you are alone you will get arrested and $15.47 is not worth all of that.
5. Start being nicer to your mom. She only has a few years left. Don't lie to her as much. Make weekend shopping trips with her. Ask her about her past. Ask her why she is in a bad mood. Your life is more than your social life and school. Tell her you love her now, don't be stingy and scared of those words. When she finds out she has cancer, don't pretend it isn't there. It is. And you will miss her a lot when she is gone.
6. Get to know your Dad more. He's going to be there a lot longer. And he likes singing with you, so keep that up.
Advice to Amy age 19:
1. It's ok to cry. Go cry on Melanie's shoulder. That's why she's your best friend and your sister.
2. Do things for yourself. Worry about yourself, not everyone else. It hurts you, too.
3. Don't try to get back into your Nazi dorm after too many drinks. They are going to make you go to the hospital and fight 3 nurses. Fun story later, but still kind of embarrassing to tell.
4. After you meet Nic, notice when he tries to kiss you on your second date before he leaves for the night. It'll make your relationship fall into place a lot faster.
5. Don't think that he is going to think you are stupid or weird and run away if you tell him things. It's going to wear him down that you're so guarded because of that stupid boy in the past. Save him a lot of trouble and tell him things straight up. He likes you a LOT and is going to take the time to get in anyway.
6. Next summer spend more time with Melanie in Boston than at Nic's childhood home. You will miss her in the fall. And then you won't get nosy and start finding things having to do with his ex girlfriend. You don't want to have to think about that and ruin perfectly good moments. You won't want to ask him about it and never have the nerve. That was his past, and he loves YOU now. So get over it.
