Advice to Shelley Long at age 14
1. Don't be so hard on your Mother. Do more around the house for her and don't complain that she is tired all the time. In 20 years, you will realize that she suffered from depression, as do you, and you will wish you were kinder.
2. Pay attention when your father tries to show you how to build things, or fix things. He doesn't know how to relate to you, but it isn't because he doesn't love you. After you leave home, you will rarely speak to him, and when he dies, you will regret that you didn't ask him more questions
3. Susan is a good friend, even if she seems like a wild party girl now, she is a better person than Mary, who will torment you throughout high school. Stand up to Mary--you are stronger than you think you are.
4. It's ok that you like movies, books, drawing and dancing more than being with other people--it doesn't mean that you are weird. You are creative, and smart, and have a good sense of humour, which will become more important as you get older, even though you would rather be pretty now.
5. Don't kiss that guy you will meet in the park by the swings in a couple of years. You'll never see him again. You will have a boyfriend when you are ready. Just because you haven't had one yet, does not mean that men won't ever find you attractive. You will appreciate being a late bloomer and your strong, independent self will be having great sex in your 40's when other girls in your high school class will be overweight and unhappily married.
