Advice to lo at age 14
1. don't waste your time being hung up on john. He is a loser. Or if you must be hung up on him, at least don't ignore him, waiting for him to come to you, because unless you put a stop to it now, it will take you 10 years to get sick enough of running that pattern to quit.
2. don't try the "extreme truth" experiment and completely erode the barrier between what you think and what you say. Whatever your uncle might claim, that barrier is there for a reason.
3. don't take a high school detour by trying out an all girls catholic school. "novel" does not equal good or even necessarily interesting. Whatever you might have in common with loads of sheltered middle class pretty average white girls is not worth $3000 per semester to discover.
4. it's okay to stop loving rich, but grow a backbone and just let him know. It's completely unnecessary and even kind of harmful to putter along waiting for something else to end it.
5. don't make that weird joke about abby's brain tumor or about Katherine bringing that picture of her dead cat to school just to get pity. Sometimes truth is not the only consideration. ß a hard pill to swallow
6. become best friends with lanada right away because she is definitely the best thing, maybe besides abby, that could ever happen to you during adolescence
7. write down granddaddy's history before he dies because it's yours and its important. Or if you cant do it, get somebody else to. It doesn't mean you have to be nice to him.
8. I know youre convinced that thinking you're cool and maybe even having other people think so is interchangeable with actually liking yourself. Please learn the difference.
