Advice to LD at ages 8 through 11
1. Don't let M. Beth make you play the boy all the time it will only confuse your future relationships with beautiful, interesting girls. Don't feel bad about beating up the boys, you'll learn soon enough why you did it. Don't feel responsible for protecting your entire family - it's not possible. Don't let your mum force you to finish a year of Girls Guides, all you will learn is to be angry and sad - you will feel like a social outcast and the idea of finishing anything will become a major issue for you later in life...plus those bitches in the blue dresses are racist, some of them are thieves, they tell lies, and they will leave you silenced for the first time. Be proud.
To LD aged 12 to 17
2. Don't let your friends define you - they are insecure. Play competitive sports. Make art. Don't fight with Jenn - she will break your heart. Fall in love with whomever you want. Be proud.
To LD aged 18 to 22
3. Don't drive and smoke with Pam. Don't stop writing or creating. Don't date anyone who leaves a note under your windshield-wiper that reads "your a slut". Scream back at D - try to stop him. Don't drive when you know a panic attack is inevitable. Don't have sex with boys - the ones you pick are all wrong. Don't try to figure your parents out, they are simply your parents and you love them. Don't get burned. Even feminists get raped - don't think too much about this. Get a feminist therapist. Don't wait until now to start distance running and yoga. Be proud.
To LD aged 23 to 24
4. Don't follow a pathological liar across the country on a Greyhound bus. Don't live in your boyfriend's shadow. Don't snort your antidepressants. You're not a victim - meditate on this daily. Don't give a damn about your reputation. Finish writing that script. Don't allow your boyfriend to film you doing anything you may want to forget later. Don't register for classes - you should not attend that school right now. Know that this too shall pass. Be proud.
To LD aged 25 and onward
5. Don't allow your life to be ruled by fear. Celebrate often. Don't lose touch with your friends - you will miss them. Create new rituals. You're smart, but don't try to think your way through this. Write everyday. He loves you - believe this. Take your mother's advice. Eat good food. Make art. Save money. Get a relevant education. Be proud.
