Advice to Govind at age 18.
1. Don't take those exams so seriously. You're not going to do well and it won't make any difference to your life.
2. Stop pretending to need glasses. You don't have to convince everyone around you that you are trying hard.
3. Don't act depressed on getting a bad grade. Don't feel guilty about smiling.
4. Play more sport. It is the last time you will have the opportunity to in a long time.
5. Learn an instrument. You will want to once you finish high school.
6. People aren't always talking about you. They don't really care what you look like. Not all your friends are judgmental.
7. It's ok to speak up. Try to do it more often. They won't all laugh at what you have to say.
8. Read more.
9. Don't spend all your time trying to be funny. Your friends will like you for who you are. Try to have emotionally close friendships. You will start to resent your friends after school if you don't.
10. Don't worry about feeling lonely. You're going to spend much more time dealing with it once you finish school.
11. Write to your parents more often. Tell them about what is going on. They will remember things about your life that you won't. No one cares for you more than they do.
12. Don't worry about how fat you are. Don't worry about your pecks. You're not fat and you will lose weight once you leave high school. Don't partake in your friend's neurotic obsessions.
13. Have more fun. Stay up late more often. Say more stupid things.
14. Act in more plays.
15. Audition more at musical evenings.
16. Go and do that thank you speech at the final musical evening.
17. Stop trying to please everybody. It's ok if people don't like you.
18. Stop hating and questioning yourself. Its hurting the way you are going think about yourself and the way you are going to live your life.
19. If you don't get to leave India to study, don't do engineering or science.
20. Spend Sunday mornings on a bicycle riding around the school, rather than in the class room studying.
21. Masturbate more often.
22. Don't want the things in life your friends want.
23. Don't think twice about wanting to study psychology when you leave school. People never really know what they really want to do.
24. Don't worry so much about being responsible. The more effort you put into it, the harder it becomes.
