Advice to Jeanne at age 18:
1. It would be best if you attend Rice University instead of ESM. There are many reasons why this would be better:
a) The same teacher you want to study with at ESM is also at Rice so you would get the same training.
b) Rice has offered you more money, so in the future you won't have to pay back as many debts; plus you will get in-state tuition so the cost are already lower.
c) You few up in Houston and have established connections in the music scene; this will help when you graduate and benefit you in getting a job. You also already have symphony connections in San Antonio.
d) You are still green in the field and ESM is more for people who have been pushed more. They have more knowledge and experience, so it would be easier on you in the long run if you spend this time at a smaller school. It may be possible to attend ESM after you feel more secure and have gained more experience. Maybe for grad school, but at this time you don't have enough information. Since you have had to spend so much time working to get by and haven't always concentrated on practicing as much as you should have or could have, spending a little more time catching up would not be a bad thing. Plus, if you go to a school that is affordable, you won't have to get a job or work as hard to make money. That time would be better spent practicing or studying.
