Advice to myself at age 17
1. Pack better: your mom will throw away everything you leave behind.
2. Don't be so upset about leaving andrew, he will resurface in your life later, and you aren't meant to be together anyway.
3. Pay more attention to your brother, he is devastated you are abandoning him, and needs more care at this time. He will be your best friend, and later you will wish you had done this. You aren't running from him. Tell him he can call you whenever he needs to, and open up a line of communication to him that he can depend on.
4. Give a heartfelt thank you to your art instructor, he is responsible for getting you into college, and is disenchanted and frustrated with teaching. He is your greatest critic but also a big part of why you will do so well in years to come artistically. You will be a success and he needs the inspiration that his hard work pays off in his students.
5. When you say goodbye to your father, assure him that you will be ok and will call him every couple of days, and then do this. Be grateful but not guilty. Share with him your adventures, he is sacrificing a lot to have you there and pay for your life and would just like to know how much its worth it.
6. Be confident: not only are you escaping, but also you are building a life in Minneapolis that will support you for the next decade.
7. The people you meet in the first week will be friends for the next ten years. Calm down and take care with each person you are introduced to.
8. And like always, don't sleep with him, and date his nice roommate instead.
