Advice to Iris at age 7:
1. Don't listen to your sister. You love to dance, right? Choose to go for ballet classes! Forget the piano and enjoy it!
At age 13:
2. Don't listen to your parents. The doctor is right. You need braces. Don't feel ashamed about wearing them - everyone does at that age. You'll thank me later.
3. And, by the way: try to attend a boarding school - you'll become independent sooner and escape much of the drama that's going on at home. Work for school - it's not hard for you, and it will count later on. You like the theater, so get up on stage and try your hand at acting while you have the chance! Spend a year as an exchange student abroad. You can afford to miss some classes at home. Stop trying to please people you don't even like. Make a few real friends instead, and give them all the love you have.
At age 18:
4. So you're about to decide to study computer science since you 'want a real challenge' and you're afraid of ending up doing something useless if you follow your heart. Forget that - you've always wanted to be a writer. Do what you do best and become a journalist, not a bitter code monkey with a MA in computer science.
5. Since you're not going to listen to me any more than you listened to others who knew better: learn to take yourself less seriously, for fuck's sake. There's not much you can do for the planet in any case, so you might as well try to have some fun while you're still alive. Do the stupid thing first. Let the shy people follow.
