To Gavin at Sixteen:
1. Your father is dead. Leukemia. Well, yeah, it hurts, but embrace it. It will teach you more than all of high school.
2. You will meet a girl with a French name. She won't talk much but she is very pretty. She will love you, and her only effort in all the time you spend with her will be placed on derailing you. You have convictions, big ones. Stand up for them and put her in her place, which happens to be away from you. If you fail, it's ok. You'll come out stronger than anyone you've ever known, but with bigger burdens.
3. Respect your mother, she is in sync with God for the most part.
4. Don't forget that you as well are in sync with God.
5. Don't worry so much on getting your music out there. You're making it with every ounce of love in your soul, and that makes you ahead of most people despite your constant overwhelming panics of incompetency.
6. Your real last name is Fury. If all else fails, that is cool.
7. Don't expect everyone who comes to you for advice to truly want it.
8. Examine your responsibilities. Now look at the responsibilities of everyone else. Now draw a line between them. You can't cross that line. Now forget all about that rule, but remember it and reinstate it when people are not willing to receive help.
9. Stop worrying about whether or not you will turn out to be the person you know you should be. In most ways, you already are.
10. Go to the gym.
11. Fight. I don't know how, but just do it. I know you come home every day, hang out with your friends, laugh, and play guitar. I know you're in love with it all, the world. I also know that when everyone has left you are afraid to look inside of yourself because you hurt so badly it makes you sick. You think it will go away, but it doesn't. Like I said, fight.
12. For balance, look within. You are not chemicals, so refuse all of those pills that the doctor says can fix you.
13. She's gone. Give thanks.
14. Never judge, and always explore. Answers lie in all of the places you are drawn to.
15. Live with hope.
