Advice to Beth at age 18
1. Do not go to the prom with Marcie. She is not your best friend, she is human poison. Go to the prom with Matt, he likes your poetry and you really like him, and you are very much worth him.
2. SPEAK. Even when it is very clear you do not know what you are talking about, just keep saying what you think, as often as possible and loud enough to drown out people who try to quiet you.
3. Memorize the neighborhood in your feet, put the streets and trees and stores and the school in your toes and soles.
4. Don't bother with driver's ed. You will fail and you should really just ask for guitar lessons instead.
5. Photograph your bedroom walls, they are your best work of art yet.
6. Change your name to Bea earlier.
