Advice to Em, age 11
-Let your hair grow out, you're too young to not be mistaken for a man, but don't let it discourage you. You are one of the few people who can pull off a classy bob.
Advice to Em, age 12
-Don't be so controlling, maybe you don't realize it now, but you'll look back on it and feel really dumb about some of the things you said.
-Befriend Nathan and Tyler, they will turn out to be two of the coolest kids ever, and you'll wish you had met them sooner.
-Don't worry about Tina and Corey, they may seem bitchy now, but they're also pretty cool.
-Kevin is NOT that awesome! Stop obsessing over him!
-Don't quit trumpet, quit band. Go to Mr. Pendalton and learn about Jazz.
Advice to Em, age 13
-Don't lose Eggy's trash can, and don't write anything in your journal that you don't want him to see.
-Don't be so defensive, the shield that you build now will follow you around for years to come, and you'll miss out on many, many opportunities because of it.
Advice to Em, age 14
-Don't apply to boarding school, go to Nauset like everyone else.
-Talk to Mr. Stewart more.
-Don't let Bilbo hang out with Katie, if you do, she's lost forever.
-Go to the Juice Bar more. In a couple of years it will be a Cuffy's.
Advice to Em, age 15
-Red fishnets are not a good choice for a first day of school outfit at prep school.
-Be more open to people, don't let them make you think that you're not as good as them just because you don't shop at J. Crew.
-Try out for varsity.
-Don't do track, your shins will never be the same.
-Meet Tony sooner.
-Take Mike's advice, surfer boys are bad news.
-Sign up for honors English.
Advice to Em, age 16
-Don't lose touch with Joe.
-Don't break up with Tony.
-When Braden asks you to go back to his dorm to watch a movie, DON'T GO. It will completely ruin your friendship.
-Mirror, signal, head check.
-Don't be such a tool, you're just lonely and you want what you can't have, but don't pretend that he's special just because you want him to be.
-Don't discus your preference for vodka over whiskey when your mother may be within earshot.
