Advice to Barbara at age 17
1. Quitting high school IS a good idea. It will not affect your adult life at all, so stop worrying about whether you made the right decision or not.
2. Instead of spending two years waiting tables and bartending before going to college, go to Europe. Travel and see the world and meet lots of people, it gets harder to just pack up and go when you are older.
3. In fact, go to Ireland and enroll in College there, it will have cost less, and will be a better education anyway.
4. Start saving money now, and buy a house in 1992 in Galway for about 50,000. You will not be able to afford the housing prices there when you are in your thirties and really want to.
5. Don't get married at 22.
6. Know that it is okay to not spend 14 years of your life taking care of someone who gives you nothing in return for it. Leave him in 1993; in the long run it just isn't worth it.
7. Stop second guessing yourself. You are amazing and can do whatever you want. The world is yours, go take it.
8. Don't be afraid to challenge what your parents are telling you is a good life. You can still love them but not do what they want you to. They will love you back anyway.
9. Quit smoking NOW, I mean NOW. Trust me, all the money you will save will get you to Europe 10 times over.
10. Don't give away that black wool sweater, the turtleneck one. You will miss it for a long time.
11. Don't dye your hair blue-black. It really didn't look all that good, and your scalp will be blistered and your hair permanently straightened from the triple process in one day to try to bleach the color out. You are blonde. Deal with it.
