Advice to Iris, Age 14:
-Try to overcome the scared thoughts you have about trying new things. Don't over think it... just do it. If you feel like trying something, like track--do so.
Advice to Iris, age 16:
-Apply for jobs... fast food, retail, whatever. Expose yourself to the work force. No job is beneath you, learning exists everywhere and you take those skills with you in your future endeavors.
-When bad times come to you at this age, try to rise above it all and FIGHT the demons in your life. Point them out, don't hold it all in, don't deny what's happened. Deal with it & Don't back down or second guess yourself. You may end up saving more than just yourself in the act.
Advice to Iris, age 17:
-Throw out your feelings of embarassment about your parents and remember to tell them where you are sitting during graduation so they know where best to sit in the stadium. Seeing you graduate is just as important to them as it is to you.
-Make an effort to choose your major when applying for college. Really THINK about it. I know you don't feel ready, but try to do this... listen to your heart, follow the path it leads you on.
Advice to Iris, the college years (17-22):
-Explore more in terms of other classes, clubs and interests. Dont just stick with your chosen major. TRY other classes and when you feel the pull of another direction make the decision to move on from what you started from and start over again. Now is the time, it is easier here than once you get out to work professionally to change to and degree.
-Go on a road trip, a real road trip--across country if you can. When in life will you find yourself with 4 plus months of free time? Not after college, that is for certain. Don't use lack of money or school work as an excuse. Afford the TIME and experience the open road and the very varied terrain that America has to offer.
-Pat yourself on the back when you make sure to add Will Heywood's Finding Purpose class to your last semester of college. It is a gem of a class that keeps on giving throughout life. Refer to the lessons learned as needed.
Advice to Iris for life:
-Keep in touch as you have done throughout the years with those dear to you, family and otherwise. -Start and maintain an active lifestyle filled with exercise and fun activities. The more you do, the more energy you have to keep up with all the things you dream about doing.
-Don't ever lose that busy-body idea after idea, project after project fire you have. Take those ideas and produce them. Document them and share them with others and see what doors your work opens for you.
-Don't worry about what others think so much. Use your energies for something more positive and productive.
