advice to aem, aged 16-18
- please tell your mom about all the things that are on your mind. it's not normal to worry about sperm and light switches. you've tried to deal with it for five years by yourself Ð getting help is not a weakness. tell mom everything. she won't even be mad, because it's not your fault. tell her you want to see a psychologist and that you have obsessive-compulsive disorder. it will be much harder another three years down the road.
- date him, just to learn the hard way. he'll abuse you, manipulate you, and make you hurt like you've never hurt before, but it's better that you learn about this kind of person and this kind of relationship now than later. remember that no matter how hard he tries, he can't take who and what you are away from you. you won't let him do that, so stay strong. you'll grow up fast, but it will become an important part of you.
- please don't be such a jerk to your parents. dad is just worried about you (as he should be) and mom knows you better than you know yourself. you'll thank them later.
- after you break up with him, put yourself back together. don't leave the job to anyone else. more specifically, don't date the next nine or ten guys who are interested in you. if you don't take care of this now, you will end up with someone you really love a year and half down the road and not know how to handle it.
- save copies of all the mix CDs you make people. someday you will have all the ones given to you, but will wish you had a record of what you were thinking and saying and doing for others. yours were usually better anyway.
- stop being afraid of girls. yeah, guy friends are great. they aren't everything. it will be hard to change this habit later, and you will realize that you missed out on a lot of comfort and support, not to mention good times.
- don't stress about high school so much. you won't get any scholarships anyway. don't avoid anatomy and chemistry just because you aren't pre-med. you never will be, but you'll wish you'd taken more science classes because you like them.
- start running track earlier, and don't stop after you graduate. you will get fat and regret it. you have more determination than you think.
