Advice to Betty at 16
1. Get up and out of bed and give Patty a hug when she comes to your apartment to tell you she's leaving to California. She's really leaving for good and it will be the last time you see her. Most importantly, straighten things out with her. She will be mad at you for a different reason than you are mad at her. This misunderstanding will cause you two to not talk for many years. Stop acting so mad about things because you will be the one to look her up when you discover this network called Myspace. After reconnecting with her, you will find that it was like you two never even had a fallout. You will realize why she is one of your best friends.
Advice to Betty at 19
2. Stop making things awkward for yourself when Denise comes to town to visit. Yes, you guys grew up away from each other and hardly kept in touch while she was in Hawaii but when she comes to visit again in two years you will realize how strong and joined-at-the-hip you two really are. It is during her second visit that you two will open up to each other--the way you wanted to during her first visit--so just be patient that time will come. She will bring out your craziness and out of everyone you know, she believes in you the most. Also, she will give you the strength to finally leave Johnny. This is why she is your best friend.
Advice to Betty at 20
3.Leave Johnny right now. You will be with him for another 1 1/2 years and staying with him will only lower your self-esteem and make you depressed. He will always put his car and music before you. He will never encourage you to follow your dreams even though you support his. You deserve so much more. It doesn't matter that you've been with him for 2 1/2 years, Mom will eventually get over it and most importantly, you will find that your sisters only want what's best for you and what makes you happy.
4.Don't be so embarrassed that your younger sister, Christina, works with you. You two will actually grow a lot closer because of this.
5.Stop second-guessing yourself. Understand that Mom will always think the way she does because she is a mom and that she only wants the best for you because she had to work so hard to get where she is at today. Also, understand that Mom will love you no matter what you decide to do with your life. She is very proud of who you've become so quit worrying already about what she will think and live your life for you.
Advice to Betty at 22
6. Call your grandparents and call them often. Ask them about their life experiences and go to them for advice. You will lose them this year and will find out more about them at their funeral than you did while they were still alive.
7. Don't get too caught up in your relationship with Mark and pay attention to your sisters more often. Be a better sister. One of them will be scared to come to you when she needs to and the other doesn't know how to open up to you.
8. Let go of the relationship. Mark is amazing and will still be in your life. It's not always going to be all about you. He needs this as much as you do. You guys both still have so much growing to do. Things will be better this way.
