Me: Mom, mom, are you awake? Can you hear me? I want you to know that you probably are going to die tonight, and I had to take the phone off the hook because I couldn't stand it ringing without stopping. And I knew you were so drunk, you wouldn't remember talking to me anyway. Mama, you are going to die tonight, this time you won't make it through your countless overdoses. I am sorry I am not there to help you. Betsy will find you in the morning, and she will scream so loud that the little old ladies who live across the hall will hear her. She will run over there and ask them to call the ambulance, and she will call Alice, and not be able to speak. Only moan a cry like awounded animal.

Mama: Sandra, were you here two days ago? Did you come in and take my credit card?

Me: Yes, but I needed it. Mama I love you so much, and I have spent ten years of my seventeen year old life trying to save yours. Mama you are not going to make it, and it makes me want to die. But I won't die like you. I wil get sober and fight your battles. Mama, did I ever tell you how fine you were, how I loved the way you dressed, and the way you walked, and your compassion for the world. Well try to wake up and hear me now before you go. I had lunch with your friend, Mr. JMP, and he was really nice and fun to talk to, but I can't go to L.A. with him. He wants to get me in bed, and gosh, I'm only seventeen and he is thirt eight. Can't you see through that. I only wish you would have stopped drinking. But I love you with all my heart, and I'm glad it's finally over for you, and for me. Bye, Mama.
