Me: Hello?

Kate: Hiii.

Me: Oh my god, you called!

Kate: Yeah.

Me: Are you leaving soon?

Kate: I'm on my way to the airport.

Me: That's so cool. You must be really excited. Do you have any plans for when you get there or are you guys just wingin' it?

Kate: I don't know, well my best friend is getting married while I'm there...

Me: Yeah I remember. So they're going through with it. That's amazing that she decided to do it while you're there.

Kate: Yeah, I'm really excited.

Me: Between your sister and your best friend, you're surrounded by weddings.

Kate: Yeah. I'm really happy.

Me: That's awesome. Hey I saw that movie you kept talking about. I sent you a copy.

Kate: Oh my God, what'd you think?

Me: It made me really happy. You know, those magical moments when something mundane becomes transcendent, or when it sort of falls apart in a way that makes you want to laugh. You know, or when someone drops a miracle right in your lap. ...Anyway.

Kate: Hey, I just wanted to say I'm sorry for the whole thing with Georgi.

Me: Wow, thank you. That means a lot to me.

Kate: I've been so busy the last week and then getting sick, I totally forgot-

Me: I totally understand. It's ok. Hey how's the job search going?

Kate: I haven't heard back yet, but I'm really excited about one of them.

Me: Sounds like your life is really coming together.

Kate: Yeah, the last week has been good. It's been hard, but really good.

(pause)

How have you been?

Me: (sigh) Oh, I've been having a hard time, but for a lot of reasons. Hey do you think there's any hope for us, I mean, as friends or whatever?

Kate: Yeaah, of course.

(pause)

David, I'm sorry. It wasn't you, I just freaked out.

Me: I really tried Kate.

Kate: I know. It wasn't your fault. I just felt like I was losing myself. It was just too much.

Me: I'm sorry I blamed you in the beginning. It was totally my fault. I just didn't know. Kate, please forgive me. I'm so sorry.

Kate: Of course.

Me: I really did everything I could. I never wanted to hurt you.

Kate: I know.

Me: Thank you.

(pause)

God, it really helps to hear that.

(pause)

Kate: I should go. I'm getting close to the airport.

Me: Hey, well, have a great trip. I can't wait to hear about your surfing adventures.

Kate: I'll give you a call when I get back.

Me: I'd like that.

Kate: Have a great New Years.

Me: You too.

Kate: Buh-bye.

Me: Bye.
