Me: hello?

Mom: I've been calling.

Me: I know. I've been not answering.

Mom: Why do you do that?

Me: Because I'm angry.

Mom: I'm your mother. You should treat me with respect.

Me: You're my mother. You were supposed to protect me.

Mom: From what?

Me: From everything. From hunger, pain, bullies. From your boyfriends and their inappropriate touching. From self destructive behavior, both mine and yours.

Mom: What have I done that's so terrible?

Me: There were no rules. I drove you out for munchies at three o clock in the morning the night before my AP History test. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you weren't driving doped up. But good parents don't deal drugs. Good parents don't gamble their pockets empty when the power has been out for a week.

Mom: I love you.

Me: You say that. But the words are glass and they're resting on a very unstable shelf.

Mom: What?

Me: It's a metaphor. Love is more than words. And if you had ever been the model mother, I would have been the loving daughter.

Mom: I'm your mother, I raised you.

Me: And I'm how I was raised to be. I can't trust you won't hurt me. So it's easier to ignore your calls
