Me: Hello?

M: Hi, it's me, mom.

Me: I haven't seen you in ten years, why are you calling me?

M: I just wanted to say I was wrong. I was wrong for saying you were worthless and stupid and ugly and unwanted. I'm sorry for ever saying those things or for making you feel like you were never good enough. I'm sorry I hit you. I'm sorry I grounded you for half of your senior year and made you quit your soccer team. I'm sorry I didn't have faith in you, or trust you, or respect you, your privacy, or your ideas. I'm sorry I withheld love and affection. I'm sorry I took your father's side instead of your side when you told me about the things that happened that never should have happened. I was wrong. And I hold myself accountable for all the pain you ever suffered, for all the hurt I ever caused you. And I know it's too late to win back your love, but I am here if you ever need a mother. In the meantime, I found you some surrogate parents who will provide you with all the love and attention I could never give you. They live conveniently down the street from you, and have a backyard full of horses, puppies, penguins, and tiger cubs. Here's your father.

F: I'm sorry. I know nothing I can say can give you back your childhood and your innocence. But I know how much you love your dog, so I will pay for any and every expense that he incurs so that you have one less thing to worry about. I hope you like your new parents. I know you never want to see me again, so I will remain out of your life, but make sure you are always provided for.
