1) I moved to Brooklyn--my second move of the year, which was typical of my five-year sojourn in New York, but this move would mark the beginning of a three-year adventure, highlighted by employment at Brooklyn Academy of Music and everything I got to see there, long walks in Prospect Park, visits to the Brooklyn Museum, and parties at my apartment and elsewhere in the Borough.
2) I read, back to back to back, Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano, William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch, and Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail.
3) Mario Cuomo's riveting speech at the Democratic Convention inspired wags and pundits to wonder why he wasn't running; he would spend the next eight years wondering the same thing.
4) I went to Mardi Gras, a bacchanalian experience that's worth trying once, when you're in your early twenties, with so many more mind-expanding adventures ahead of you.
5) I left my job at Lincoln Center, a couple of months after moving to Brooklyn; BAM would still be a couple more months away, so I worked at the Met Opera Gift Shop, living on $4.50 an hour and not eating much--my mother took pity and gave me a $0.29 can of SPAM for Christmas (no sense of irony or humor in that gesture; it was purely in the spirit of the holiday season.).
