4. we got corrie, a beautiful west highland white terrier (from the gaelic coire, which is the name for a small indentation in a mountainside which gathers snow. he was small and white, hence the name.)
5. prince's 'purple rain' was no 1 on the BBC chart. we listened to it on the radio from my brother's bedroom whilst having tea at the white plastic breakfast bar shaped like a keyhole in the kitchen across the hall, and had to turn it off when mum got angry at the madonna song "Like a Virgin", saying 'it's all about sex!'. which it was.
