(Teacher and assistant teacher walking up the stair-well on the way to a junior high school English lesson.)
Me (assistant): So what's the plan for class today?
Mr. M (teacher): Oh, can we do a communicative activity? I want the students to talk.
Me: What do you have in mind?
Mr. M: Anything is fine? Do you have any ideas?
Me: Class starts in 5 minutes. Didn't you make a plan?
Mr. M: Oh, right, but I must return tests to the students. So you have 15 minutes.
Me: (stopping) That's not enough time to prepare something.
Mr. M: (stops) Oh, I see. You can use chalk and the black board. (laughs and starts walking again)
Me: Wait, I need some direction. What have they studied?
(two students walk past, make eye contact with me and laugh)
Mr. M: (laughing) Ok, ok. I see, ok, ok. Anything is ok?
Me: Wait, I need you to tell me these things earlier so I can have time to prepare something.
Mr. M: (still laughing) Oh, oh, I see, I see.
Me: I'm serious. If we are going to work together we need to talk about the lesson before class.
Mr. M: (not understanding my English, still laughing) Ok, ok. We can do anything?
(Mr. M walks into classroom, I follow. Class period is spent revising tests.)
