Seven years ago on this day (June 3rd) I sat with my father in a hospital room in Santa Monica, California as he died. Immediately after he died I left the room and stood in the hallway of the critical care unit. My uncle and cousin stayed and sang a hymn, or maybe more than one, to his spirit. I walked on the beach after his death. While my father was dying at the hospital I sat next to him and occasionally held his hand or touched his face or kissed his forehead, but I did not talk much because I kept getting enormously choked up. Death is not for the living.
