It didn't seem fair to me that people in every other country in the world grew up immersed in a great sport like football (soccer), whilst I grew up in America and was never taught to love it. I was 17. It was my first year of football. I'd never had more fun in my life. It made me feel worldly, like I was connected to the rest of the world for the first time in my life. It was awesome. Five games into the season, I fall on the field, tear my ACL and lateral meniscus. But that's not even the bad part. I go in for surgery to get it repaired, and for the next 3 weeks I'm bed-ridden, for the next 2 months I can't walk, for the next 4 months I can't run, for the next 6 months I can't play football. I have to relearn basic things like standing up and walking because my leg can't remember how. That's what stings...that's what make this scar ugly.
