This 1" scar is just above my right hipbone. I got it when I was about 11 or 12 years old. Like most kids my age who play sports, I looked up to a lot of the pros of the day. Back then, I admired Robin Yount, Ozzie Smith, Gary Templeton, Ricky Henderson....speedy, fluid players with canon-like arms. These guys were also well-known for going in head-first when stealing a base. I got a good jump that day, went in head-first, but came up with this gash in my side. I remember the stinging pain; I remember seeing the dry, infield dirt absorbing the blood; I remember thinking that it was stupid not to have my uniform tucked in; but I don't remember if I was safe at second.
