When I was 7 my mom noticed this strange white growth on my eye. To me it was a whitehead that would go away in due time. To my mom, however, it was a threat of future blindness. Apparently, in her village back in Vietnam, there was a tale of a man with the same small growth that turned for the worse when it grew unabated and completely blocked his sight rendering him blind in that eye for life. In fear of this fate for me, my mother dragged me to the front driveway on a sunny spring afternoon where plentiful sunlight would help her remove this seemingly menacing growth. With the help of a safety pin and some force against my resistance, she managed to remove this (idle) threat for good. Nonetheless, I was left with this weird brownish scar on the bottom lid of my left eye for the past 14 years. Also, I've been wearing contact lenses for the past 7 years so I get a daily reminder of this incident. The irony of all of this is my optometrist is worried it may be skin cancer.
