This is Bob's scar. The scene is set in Mississippi circa 1942. Sometimes, instead of using actual fence posts, folks would plant trees all in a line and wrap the fence wire around the trees. The trees would grow and grow around the wire. When a fence needed to be moved, someone would have to cut into the tree to dislodge the wire. Bob's dad was doing just that. Unfortunately, his dad didn't know that Bob was behind him. This scar is from the butt end of the axe. The scar is so prominent not only because of the nature of the injury but also because the only doctor in town, a 400lb habitually drunk M.D, was actually drunk at the time and stapled Bob's head shut with regular staples. Not medical staples, and no stitches.
