Every child in Singapore gets a vaccination injection at birth, and when we are 12 years old (except if you are allergic). It is usually on the left arm.

The second vaccination is called the "BCG" , a protection against tuberculosis, and most of us fear that fateful day. Nicknamed the "fire injection" , stories of pain and agony caused by the injection have circulated for years.

One week prior to the "BCG", you get a "test injection" on the lower arm. If the swelling from this injection does not go away, you don't have to have the vaccination. Many people slap & pinch their test spots to make the swelling stay, but I'm not sure the pain is worth it in the end.

The actual injection was not that bad, you feel as if a hot liquid is injected into your arms. But for the next few weeks, woe befalls anyone who forgets and scratches the spot by mistake. Blood, pus and pain is definitely part of the healing process.
