Two and a half months after that car wreck, I had a one-week temp job building trusses. I was not properly trained on the equipment and during the last hour of my last day, my finger got squished in a hydraulic vice press. Most pain ever. It looked like a stepped-on hot dog. The meat of my finger hung in two strips from the bone and later coworkers said they found my fingernail a half-inch deep in the board. It was a miracle that the bone didn't shatter, which would have guaranteed amputation and to everyone's surprise my fingernail even grew back. The scar is still sensitive on the tip to cold and pressure. Here you can see how close the skin is to the bone, and how much of my finger is missing.
